Xander Zhou AW19
Beijing-based designer Xander Zhou develops a playful collection born of the final frontier titled ‘Supernatural, Extraterrestrial & Co.’ It’s The Jetsons if they emerged from the depths of The Twilight Zone, equal parts sublime and frightening. Citing his inspiration as the fear of an uncertain future, Zhou balances this sense of dread with scores of optimism in colour and texture across the collection.
In the softer elements of the range, cosy two-pieces in white and grey fleece envelop the intergalactic figures. Pilose beasts saunter down the runway carrying mini fur-babies as the ultimate neo-accessory. There are hues of rust and sand in relaxed silhouettes, alluding to a cosy Martian reality. Primary greens, reds and yellows in functional detailing complement the darker shades of the collection.
Other more sinister garments engineered in PVC and latex are coloured in industrial grey and clinical blue. Drawing inspiration from aquatic landscapes, some of Zhou’s pieces merge amphibian qualities with that of the human – as shown in the full bodysuit growing fin-like appendages. Clear, oozing slime adorns the faces of the humanoids as if they are freshly emerged from a cloning tank. Many looks are paired with fang-like prosthetics, bionic limbs and clear tubing. Despite this unsettling detailing, the collection is highly palatable. Many of the silhouettes borrow from utilitarian and sportswear tailoring so when placed in isolation of the overarching show concept, they play as updated classics in their own right. If this is Zhou’s vision of the future, we’re gladly joining him on the motherboard.
