Pose Pose Pose
Featured in each photograph is the talented ballroom dancer Jal Joshua who was passing through Amsterdam whilst travelling across Europe at the time of the shoot. Every pose by Joshua is derived from ballroom culture and transformed into striking images that accentuate the flamboyant clothing. It is only through the movements of the dancer that the viewer can experience the full effect of the garments, from the gloved roll neck to the Ferry Schiffelers crooked handle bag, which looks like an elongation of Joshua’s hair.
The artistic poses are reminiscent of pop and camp culture, with Joshua’s ‘voguing’ poses framing his bold pink eye makeup amidst the stripes of the Karolina Widecka cape. The editorial exudes liberation through Joshua’s movement, encapsulating the ever-increasing freedoms of expression for youth cultures in today’s society.
