Plutonium-239
Giacomo Parrella is a London-based stylist whose work is fondly non-binary inspired by the search for their own identity and its fluctuate nature. At the heart of Plutonium-239” is the relationship between the non-binary & trans community with Hyperpop, a musical genre widely known for its synthetic textures and pitch-modified vocals.
“I am portraying a metaphorical “explosion” which depicts the perpetual search for identity that trans and non-binary folks experience.” Using Hyperpop aesthetics as a vessel for their narrative, every look is representative of carefully crafted pop-star images. Gender dysphoria is especially helped through pitch-shifted vocals; through this, artists such as Laura Les & the late Sophie clearly demonstrated the indispensable trans roots of Hyperpop. Continuing the non-conformative sentiment, this project becomes a play between physicality and immateriality as Giacomo creates and tailors each graphic according to the respective look. Some may say that the search for identity is one of volatility: “Plutonium-239 is one of the main isotopes employed for nuclear production.”
