Myka

Myka

MYKA, an experimental alt R&B musician, has released a new song called "Gucci Bloom." The genre-bending songwriter talks about lost love and painful endings in the context of dating in this new single. The deep and emotionally poignant narrative, inspired by a woman he met on Tinder who abruptly cut things off, leaving MYKA devastated and confused. This artist lets his listeners know precisely what he's going through, even down to the finest fractures in his broken heart.

"Gucci bloom" is a ruminative late-night atmosphere that is accessible and emotional, with uninhibited lyricism, warm intimate voices, and a kaleidoscope of creative soundscapes.

A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, MYKA began recording music at 13 years old in a makeshift studio. He had already released three mixtapes and several tracks by the time he became legal. His family was continually migrating from state to state when he was in his late teens. MYKA was able to immerse himself in a variety of cultures and music scenes because of this, and he was eventually able to pinpoint exactly who and what he wanted to be.

MYKA confides about "Gucci bloom", “I was a little upset. I didn’t like how she did it. The message is basically about not repeating relationships or things over again the same way you did before but with different people. It’s happened to me a bit, but it’s just because I didn’t learn the other times. You gotta stop repeating bad habits. It’ll take time, but no matter what, always choose yourself first. It happens to the best of us especially when you’re in the moment.”

Coeval Magazine chats with this multi-faceted musician who has established a profession with an eclectic blend of genre-defying and catchy compositions. About his music-making, his current home in Los Angeles and how he continues to develop his sound and style.

How are you finding being a musician now?

I’m enjoying it a lot at this moment. So much is starting to happen. It’s slow but things are getting a lot more serious which is fantastic because that’s what I’ve always wanted. Times are a little weird with the music industry and even people today, but I continuously remain myself and true to what I want to do and be as an artist.

Tell us about your back story, how did you enter the world of music? Does your North Carolina background influence your music?

I started making music at 13. I was just hanging with my cousin, who at the time had a makeshift studio and I was just like hey I think I can do this, and I gave it a shot. He helped me out and when the song was released all my friends at school loved it. They were all confused like “how did you even make a song?” Haha and from there I never turned back. North Carolina has given me so much to pull from. It’s a place that has moulded me so much as an artist and person I will forever have a love for my hometown! Greensboro to be exact.

Where do you usually pull your inspiration from?

I pull a lot from my own personal experiences and from things I’m inspired by. Films, Painters, Life, and a multitude of genres. Sometimes when I need inspiration, I get on YouTube and watch Jean-Michele Basquiat’s documentary “The Radiant Child”. I honestly can get inspired by something I just heard or see, especially in conversations. I’m always searching for that.

How would you describe your genre/style of music?

I would describe my style of music as a melting pot of dark and light sounds coming together and becoming one. I pull from genres of different eras such as Alternative, R&B, Hip-Hop, Pop and Indie Rock.

Your upcoming single, “Gucci bloom” is said to be a hit, and the concept is about romance, what does the single mean to you?

This is one of my most relatable and personal songs to date. It meant a lot and still means a lot to me when I wrote it. I’m someone who’s a hopeless romantic. I have been my whole life even when I try not to be haha. I’ve always wanted to make a song that made me feel like I was listening to myself or band at a concert while everyone has their lighters or phones in the air and singing every word, maybe in tears but dancing haha. I wanted to pull that emotion out. I feel like I nailed it.

The single is about a girl you met on Tinder who abruptly cut things off, do you always pull inspiration from your romantic life?

Yeah, I ALWAYS pull from my romantic life. I used to be in poetry club my Junior year in High School and I remember every poem would be heartfelt and it trickled over into my music. I love love haha even if it’s short-lived, even I’m upset and mad. It gives me something to write about. My manager Jean-marc always makes a joke that when I go through a heartbreak, he knows my best music is coming haha.

Are you going to perform the single live? Have you got any shows lined up, can you tell us a bit about them?

Yes, I’m gonna perform the single. Friday, Dec. 3rd I have a show in Philadelphia at Kungfu Necktie. It’s my old stomping ground I can’t wait to see my supporters and friends. It’s going to be amazing! It’s my first show since Covid.

How do you want people to feel when listening to “Gucci bloom”?

I want people to feel like they can move on from whatever heartbreak they may have had. You can roll the windows down at night or in the daytime and sing along with friends and dance or even shed a few tears but tears of moving on to better things, learning from mistakes and choosing yourself because that’s what matters more than anything. That’s what my music is about. Guiding and saying hey I’m right here with you. I’m going through it too.

How would you like your music to develop even more over the next couple of years?

I would like to keep just doing what I do best and that’s just being me. Accepting every part of me creatively. Continuing to bridge the gap between generations sonically. Expanding the sound to new heights in terms of composition and song writing. Stepping outside of the box, always and pushing for more and more. Right now, I’m learning the guitar and I have a vocal coach, I haven’t made my best music yet. Right now, I’m in the moment and enjoying and I honestly can’t wait to see I do next.
