Future Chess Club

Future Chess Club, a mysterious Swedish producer, has released his astounding debut single "Get You High," which fuses Electronica with elements of Melodic House to create a slow-burning, addicting, and euphoric composition. During its three-and-a-half-minute duration, it carries listeners across dazzling sounds and an emotionally compelling tune.

Future Chess Club's music is the culmination of a long period of production learning and progress at home, where he was labelled "a weirdo" at school. His anonymity contrasts with very personal music and tale in which community and cooperation are essential elements. The online flowering of FCC's project is a digital translation of the time he spent in his basement playing chess with a small group of buddies. The club's goal is to provide a safe environment for people to trade, share, and cooperate.

Discussing his vision for the project, Future Chess Club shared:

“I always felt different, in my own bubble, Future Chess Club for me was a way to share my feelings and emotions without showing who I really am. When I was younger I was part of a Chess Club and this was a really safe place for me, where I met people like me who became my friends. With this project, I want to create a place where people can discuss, share their feelings and collaborate.”

In a more in-depth between Coeval Magazine and Future Chess Club, we delve into his childhood, how he was named "a weirdo" and how he has now turned that into his shining light.

How did you get into music? Have you always wanted to pursue a producer career since being a youngster?

I remember the first time I got my hands on a music production program, I got it when I bought a pair of jeans haha. It was a simple program where you dragged loops on top of each other, can't remember the name, but I remember that I was so thrilled and excited that I managed to create my own songs. After that, I got into DJing, making my mashups of existing songs that I loved, I thought that I made them twice as good when I put two great songs together. Then FL came into my life, at the same time I discovered J Dilla and Nujabes, I didn't go to school because I was at home making beats.

For people who are unaware of your music, in your own words what is the sound you create?

I try to make music that makes you dance and cry at the same time. Something you can listen to in a crowd full of people, or at home alone. Electronic music that makes you feel something.

I read that you were considered "a weirdo" at school because he spent a lot of time at home learning and improving his production skills and playing chess with a little group of friends. How do you feel about this now? Do you think being different/authentic has made you a happier person?

Putting “chess club” in my name is a homage to the younger me, that it's the new cool! That it's awesome being different and nerdy. Older me turned out fine and I'm happy I tried to not focus on what other people thought of me, even though it was difficult at times. Future chess club is a place for nerds, weirdos or call them as you want, just people who belong maybe somewhere else and who have dreams.

And, what inspires your music? Personal memories, art, etc?

I get inspired by a lot of art, people, everything from music to architecture. With this project, I've been trying hard to create something from a feeling. One objective I have is to try to translate a feeling into sound and then turn that into a song. I’m really curious to see how people will react to it and if they get that feeling. If yes that would mean that I’m on the right path.

You have just released your new single "Get You High" - what does this track of work mean to you?

It's the first song on this journey, a song that is a journey within itself. It's special to me because it showcases a lot of my different personalities as a musician. Emotional, relieving, and exciting. When it’s your debut single, it’s always super stressful, you don’t know what is going to happen, you don’t know if people will like it or understand what you want to achieve if this will be played or not, but I’m trying to stay positive and I got a lot of music ready.

"Get You High" is three-and-half minutes long of slow-burning, addictive and euphoric sounds, can you walk us through the production of this track?

I wanted to create something visual but through sound. It starts with hardship that turns to perseverance, which then, in the end, resolves into something beautiful, almost like acceptance or peace. It doesn't have recurring “festival drops” or crazy build-ups, but rather more of an evolving trip with new sounds every few seconds. I used very classic house/techno drums, a granular synthesizer, and organic sounds like kalimbas.

How do you want people to feel when listening to "Get You High »?

I just want people to feel inspired. Not only to create art but also to push forward through obstacles they are facing. I don’t think I’m unique, but if my music and my story can help other people to achieve their goals, that would mean the world to me. You don’t have to take substances to get high, your body can create dopamine or adrenaline, for example when you meet someone and a kind of magic happens, you feel different and weird, or when you were waiting for a phone call and it finally rings, or when you take a step back during a party with your friends to truly enjoy the moment. This song is about that feeling.

How would you like your music to develop even more over the next couple of years?

I want to be able to build a world around my music, not only through sound but also visually and in written form. Also one of the most important things for me is being able to create a place, where the community can exchange, hang out and express themself, this is how I see the Future Chess Club. When I was younger my Chess Club was an amazing place, where I met my friends, exchanged and discuss. In the modern world, I feel it’s really rare to find this type of place and I think it will take new forms such, maybe in the web3 like fwb (Friends with Benefits) for example which is an amazing idea.
