“Eagerness for old garments came when my mother showed me the garments she had owned since her youth, personally made by her grandmother. This made me realize, that it has allowed me to generate a link with the craftsmanship of 3 generations, thus achieving communication with history, historians,”
Evangelina, what's the story behind the name, Evade house? How it came to life?
Evade House is a project that aims to find and give happiness to everyone who seeks it. Thanks to our timeless garments, in which we focus on the memories the materials give to the viewers and also the arduous production processes. With this, we remember those tender childhood moments, bringing them alive again.
When I lived in London, my housemates often told me that I could totally evade myself from the rest of the house, as I was really concentrating on my work - sometimes they didn’t even know if I was inside. And that’s where the name came from; I even liked it more when I realized that it included my name.
On the other hand, including the house was a nice space to allow anyone to come to our house as a place for escape.
Craftsmanship with the fascination towards past times it is evident you like fantasy, please describe, what is it about that time, that lures you.
I wouldn’t say I like classifying into one epoch. My eagerness for old garments came when my mother showed me the garments she had owned since her youth, personally made by her grandmother. From that moment, I fell in love with these handcrafted garments, their fabrics, and the purpose that had been carried out. This made me realize, that it has allowed me to generate a link with the craftsmanship of 3 generations, thus achieving communication with history, historians, and consumers, as well as redrawing the current sustainability models.
I'm curious to know about your first encounter with fashion. What was it and how did all this start (before modeling)?
In reality, I always wanted to be a soccer player. Still, the clothes were always present since I was constantly dressing up to pretend to be these players, both in their personal and professional lives. After this, you know how I got into the fashion world through modeling.
Is fashion art for you?
Art is any form of genuine expression that comes within and could be put in a global context of other creative voices. What I enjoy about fashion is the ability to express myself without the need to speak. Fashion is a powerful tool in which you can get into trouble, be in trouble, or solve the trouble.
Kindly give us a little insight into your concept and design process.
I love to interact with things that surround me and find a balance between antagonist concepts that feels pretty. Each collection has its own feeling and aesthetic. I never know where is going to lead me and that is what excites me. I start to realize that all the things that surround me are the ones that inspired me the most.
On the other hand, speaking about my creative process, this depends on many things. I am a person who is on a thousand things at once and I jump from one topic to another. I start to investigate something when suddenly I get inspired by a tiny strange thing in the rubbish, I run to the studio, and I start to care and play with it. Eventually, there is a turning point where everything falls into place. Therefore, I would say I find the creative process along different media.
We are amongst the ones who are anti-fashion fashion people. I like the fact that you are inclusive and empowering. Please tell us about the challenges that you go through or have gone through.
There are loads of challenges, but the main ones I want to eradicate are to produce fashion for a specific consumer type. Everyone should be able to buy your clothes, including low-income and high-income consumers. Additionally, the issue of body types on the runway shows weight, height, color, etc. But the most frustrating one is the difficulty visually impaired people have buying clothes.
What is it that keeps you aligned and consistent? What drives you to work through your purpose?
It's going to sound romantic, but the happiness that the garments produce to the buyer. That smile is all that matters.
From your launch in 2020 midst lockdown to this year 2022. What has changed for you if anything?
Loads of things have changed. We have built a community with the people I love and get inspired by, and this led me to develop a better way of thinking critically and understanding where I am and where I want to go.
Your recent SS23 collection has been loved again.. Where do you see yourself going from here?
I wish to educate the consumer to buy more consciously, to show them the different types of manufacturing processes, the materials, and the effort that it takes to transform them.
