Callan
For all of those that know her by her IG handle, don’t be fooled. She is hardly a domestic servant from the 17th Century, in fact, she is exactly the opposite and more.
You are from Australia right? What is it like there?
Yeah, it's fine here. I'm privileged to live here, it's comfortable for me. It's beautiful land. I can make art, I can perform, I can party. I’m well loved and I'm given lots of opportunities. But Australia was built upon the deaths of indigenous people and that's a fucking shitty way to start things. There's big business here in sucking the land dry of all it's natural resources. There's plenty of racism and queer phobia. The government is still murdering indigenous people and has refugees kept and tortured in prison camps.
Have you ever been to the USA? Do you want to go? Never, Maybe, For Sure?
I'd like to visit one day out of curiosity. I think that the USA has a lot in common with Australia, but in a turbo charged way. Both countries are built upon the desecration of indigenous cultures and are ripe with corruption, greed, patriarchy, suppressive Christian values, white supremacy, industrialism, capitalism, etc. etc. etc. I suppose you could say that for most of the world now, but the USA is like the imperial king of that shit and that's a bit of a boner killer for me.
What is your name as a Musician? Where do you play?
We've been playing under my name, CALLAN, as it started as a solo project, but we've now changed the name to BABY. We mostly play bars and clubs in Melbourne but we've had some opportunities to branch out across the state, interstate and soon hopefully overseas. We just played our first festival on top of a mountain.
What does your music sound like?
It sounds like emotional release. It sounds like spiritual freedom. It sounds like the moment when you're staring at the stars and you realize some shit about the universe.
What do you smell like?
Sweat, piss and Tom Ford.
What are your thoughts on Nicole Kidman?
Who? Nah, she's fine, whatever. I find her acting a bit monotonous but she was pretty good in Moulin Rouge.
