Ashley Diabo
I don’t want to give anything away, but if I were walking in dark alleyway at night time or even in a well lit parking lot in the day time - I’d wanna walk with Ashley Diabo. I ask her what she has in her purse and what it’s like to be a top player in the Canadian creative scene.
What is it like working in fashion in Canada? Do you travel a lot to other places for work?
I mainly work in Montreal as of right now but I have worked a little bit in other places in Canada as well as New York. It’s definitely a small circle working in Montreal. You end up seeing a lot of familiar faces on almost every set you happen to be working on - That’s the main thing I’ve noticed!
I feel like there is definitely room for more creative, experimental projects though.
How long did it take you to get representation and has it helped you?
I was really lucky to get representation pretty quickly after I graduated from Interdec college! (Lasalle) It was just under a year of graduating. I had been asked to participate in a makeup competition within the school and we were to have one of our portfolios critiqued by a panel of judges - My agent happened to be one of them! Even though I didn’t win first place, we ended up emailing back and forth afterwards!
Representation has definitely helped me! I live on a native reservation just outside of Montreal called Kahnawake, so trying to freelance while not living in the city would have been a challenge. I was introduced to a lot of really helpful people and have had the opportunity to make amazing connections!
What is in your purse? Any make up? Do you even wear much make up personally?
In my purse I have my own personal touch up bag, a couple of brushes to powder with, my iPod classic that I use as my mirror :) my wallet, my phone charger, some garbage, some body mist spray and hand lotion. Just the basics.
I always carry a personal makeup bag & some powder brushes on me! If I’m working I’ll most likely do a full face...and I guess on my days off too! I really enjoy doing myself up for the day, I really consider it to be a time where I can just zone out and not really take anything too seriously. I usually carry pepper spray too.
Where is the craziest place you've done someone's make up?
One of the craziest places I’ve ever had to do makeup was in Quebec City while working on a campaign. It was below 40 and we were shooting outside next to a waterfall.....definitely the most extreme. In the moment it’s a challenge but there are always funny stories later down the line!
If you could invent a make up item or tool what would it be?
For me personally, something to do with traveling/my makeup kit itself would be where I’d invent something to make my life easier - That’s where I could definitely see improvement!!!
