Perfect Design

Artistic duo Lucas and Fernando from Paris are on a mission to take over the world and make it a better place with their different endeavors. Either through music with their band “Bad Pelicans” or disruptive surfboard shapes and eclectic aesthetic, their thought provoking productions don't go unnoticed. They spoke to us about their creative process and the philosophy behind their board designs taking the surf and art world by storm.

Greetings Perfect Designs, can you please introduce yourselves? What are your names?  Where are you from? How long have you guys been working together and experimenting  with art?

Bonjour, Madame, Monsieur Coeval.
Perfect Designs is an artistic entity whose goal is to define the shape of surf to come. My name is Lucas. Fernando is my best friend and my partner in many artistic projects. We come from this place:

We met at university in Paris and decided to change the world together.

How did your journey mixing the world of art, design and sports start?

Covid stopped us from being rock stars and canceled the release of our new American record  and all its tour dates.
So we decided to change the surfing world in 2020. It all started from being bored with the state  of surfing designs and aesthetics, everything running in circles. It needed some aggression and variation.

What inspired you to experiment with board shapes and designs and make your own?

We always dreamed of making surfboards for each other. We started our band (Bad Pelicans) because surf and punk music were what we were both into. It seemed like we were the only ones into this kind of combination in Paris (in 2014).

How does your creative process work?

It all starts from a drawing. Once it’s on paper, I picture the final product in my head and just go for it. I love provoking minds, and the work seems to unconsciously flow in that direction.

You have a very defined aesthetic, mixing dark medieval elements. What inspired you to  mix elements such as blades and swords with surf boards? What are the inspirations behind  your aesthetic?

From a very young age I was crazy about the middle ages, knights and castles. My heroes were also extravagant figures, artists and musicians.
I love nice things, from objects to the clothes I collect. Fernando and I are performers. We love to dress up and put on the mask, and that goes for everyday life too.

What is the message that you are trying to send with your creations?

We’re trying to bring more delicacy, curiosity, taste and creativity to this uncool and unfree modern surfing world model, now ruined by commercials, investors and capitalism. Pushing the envelope is possible, surfboard shaping is not real. You can start being unique now and shape your own self if you want to.

Have you received any backlash from the surfing industry for your experimentation with  the boards?

Yes, tons of it at first, indignation, anger, some of them were pretty violent. But since we proved it worked in the water, people started to realize that it wasn’t that stupid. We still get a few hate messages from time to time. It feels awesome.

Do you have a crazy board that you want to create in mind, a masterpiece in the making  that seems impossible to achieve? How so?

There are a few mind blowing boards and creations that the world isn’t ready to see. I would love to get started on these but we need some funding first.

What are your plans for the future with Perfect Designs?

Perfect Designs aims to conquer the surfing world, then the art world, then it will be huge on television and on the red carpet. Its gigantic investment in schools and culture will raise an intellectual and creative elite, and this army of a new kind will work towards making this world a better place.
In 2023 a new film will come out, as well as collaborations, books, new surfboards and other creations…
