Olga Fedorova
In her digital images, Olga Fedorova creates snapshots of the everyday life of the most absurd species we know: human beings. Using three-dimensional digital rendering software, the Russian artist creates characters and inserts them into spaces and landscapes. Even if the situations and gestures seem familiar to us, her creatures remain distant and surreal. This is what it must look like for aliens watching us.
The atmosphere in your images feels ambivalent: comforting and disturbing at the same time. What do you want to trigger in the viewer?
It is a very intuitive process that doesn't come out of a clear intention. I don't have much control on what my images trigger. It would limit things terribly. We think through images.
Gorillas seem to appear often in your images, do they have a deeper meaning?
They are our brothers. I am a big fan of monkeys and apes. I see many common features with them.
The people in your pictures sometimes have something of confused and stupid Sims characters in their expressions, is this a reflection of our society?
Yes, it is a reflection of our time. I like to watch and study reactions to big events.
How do you come up with the familiar yet mundane scenes we all know are depicted in your images?
watching, imaging, filtering, representation - my algorithm!
Some of the people you create, appear more often, do you have a favorite character?
I love all my characters. Sometimes characters are not very important. I just need a shape of a body to get started with a composition. When it is important to show a particular expression, I create specific characters. Sometimes I use myself.
To what extent is your history and the culture you grew up with rooted in your art?
I think it is a symbiosis of cultures. I grew up in Russia and studied art in Moscow and Brussels. Right now, everything is mixed. I work almost every day.
If you could recreate three movie characters and incorporate them into one of your scenarios, which would they be and what would they do?
Fantomas, Rocky and Elon Musk. But it could be other characters as it is not very important. In the future it will probably be possible to sell the content of your brain as a file. You will be able to save it on I cloud and sell it or share it with anybody. People will be able to experience what it's like to be Elon Musk or another person for a while. I think it will be a great experience.
What’s your current goal?
Learning new software and finding the right balance between the real world and the virtual one.
