Not Married Yet
The Peter-Pan complex describes a boy on the cusp of masculinity who refuses to grow up. But what about the complicated chasm of a girl teetering towards womanhood? This idea is captured in photographer Emma Picq’s series ‘Not Married Yet’, which portrays two young girls struggling with the sophistication of adulthood and the collapse of childlike innocence. A sense of this in-between state is signified by the styling’s juxtaposition of playful flounces of tulle and the sexualisation of lustrous latex. Pops of vibrant colours offset monochromatic palettes, and the innocence of a white bridal veil opposes the stark masochistic connotations of a black leather collar. Picq describes how the decision to leave the simplicity of childhood behind is bound to the act of dressing up. These girls aren’t just putting on costumes, they are trying womanhood on for size.
