Kermis
“KERMIS” is a photo series shot by Henrik Purienne of a Kermis, or “a typical Afrikaner church fundraiser festival” that he once came across. Each photo works as a still life with pops of color emphasizing more so the form and color palette within the photo rather than the subjects or church goers. The series depicts the life within the color of the different foods and objects at these fundraising functions.
According to the photographer, “this was pretty much the highlight of the church year.”
““A ‘Kermis’ is a church fete serving as a fund raising opportunity with the members all contributing their talents, whether it may be baking a cake, setting up a chess challenge or a ghost house under the stage. Especially popular amongst Afrikaners belonging to the New Dutch Reformed Church. Which means the goods will be crafty and the mood playful. If not absurd.””
