Cindy Lou
Taylor Momsen who played the iconic part of Cindy Lou Who in Ron Howard’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), has recently revealed in an interview why she did not wear a prosthetic nose like the rest of the cast of Whoville. She explains that she was too young to wear prosthetics but this was swerved by the director who decided on adding the line “She hasn’t even grown into her nose yet” to provide a reason to the narrative. From then on, the sweet young Cindy has changed drastically and found herself in an alternative storyline a few decades later. What is in the limelight here, is not the iconic pretzel-shaped hairstyle of the little girl with the cute blushy button nose, but a deviant adult who wears her hair wild.
She has now fully grown into her prosthetic nose and ears, becoming a fashion model posing with cars, changing from Dior to Birkin bags, and who wears Chanel balls for eyes. For fun, she likes to play with cats while wearing Ozgur Masur haute-couture unapologetically. The specific location of cuteness found in the little Cindy’s nose, and the general association of cuteness to the anatomy of a child, and the grown-up version of Cindy’s prosthetic nose and rebellious lifestyle come counter to cuteness in its monstrosity supported by the cutely coloured but freakishly long nails. Using prosthetics, make-up, designer clothes, and striding in heels, the grown-up Cindy Lou Who is seeking to understand herself in a novel way. Cindy has become this celebrated monster-model who offers a different prosthetic promise of perfectibility to fashion. Perhaps, a cutish monster.
