Hybrid
The 19th century tale of Charles Pownnall, who fell in love & impregnated a mermaid, has a deeply tragic ending. Their love-child was born a hybrid and therefore was taken by Charles to a Haidaian shamans in hopes of healing their “deformities”. Believing that Charles had murdered their child, the mermaid drove Charles mad through her absence & siren song. He then leads the massacre of Merfolk, leaving the survivors with a deep hatred towards humanity, especially the human descendants of Charles Pownall. Photographer Umur Ozan’s editorial visually interprets the story, incorporating the avant-garde in something traditionally conventional. The lightly filtered images, as well as the lighting of the shoot convey a hazy look into the story of the doomed lovers. Stylistically, the pieces featured are bold and intentional, highlighting the power of the siren’s song and her inner femininity protecting her heart.
