Tara Subkoff

Tara Subkoff

Born and raised to eccentric parents living in New York City, artist Tara Subkoff has always identified with her visionary nature. This has led her to pursue her innate creative instinct in fashion design, acting, and conceptual art. After discovering Parsons School of Design wasn’t for her, Subkoff relocated to Los Angles as a young actress studying alongside many of the 90’s starlets. Becoming a mother to her three-year-old daughter has only strengthened Tara’s passion for environmental awareness and hope for a green future, through the mass corporations. Only time can tell what this Tara Subkoff will conceptualize and share with the world.

What was it like transitioning from acting, directing, and designing to now being a conceptual artist as well? Did you know what you wanted to do from the beginning? Or was it something that took refecting and time to figure out?
I feel that I’ve always been an artist and that has been reflected in all of my work... acting is an art form, imitation of Christ was a conceptual art project and a collective that was rooted in performance art and a political project about recycling and upcycling. At some point around 2007, I started dropping creating the clothing and just started focusing more on the performances. I feel this happened organically and makes sense in the context of all the work I’ve done thus far.

Having experienced both throughout your life, do you prefer New York or Los Angeles?  In terms of both work and personal life.
I really don’t know... I’ve lived in both cities, been bicoastal and it’s a constant debate. I’m more a true New Yorker.. born and raised in NYC and an hour away and from a very New York eccentric family so I make more sense in NYC. But I love the more simple healthier lifestyle of LA.. farmers markets and hikes and nature in a city! The bicoastal lifestyle is ideal however I have a 3-year-old and will have to choose one over the other in the next year before she starts kindergarten.

Your exhibition Deepfake recently showed in New York City. Do you plan on showing Deepfake again either in the United States or elsewhere?
I would love to. We were not able to show the piece as I intended and I would love to show the mirror rotating above the rotating bed in LA at the right space.

Do you envision a future a positive future for your daughter and the generation she will grow up with?
I try my hardest to stay positive. It’s difficult... I’m friends with environmentalists and eco-warriors. The future is bleak when you examine the facts. I hope that we can all fix the mess we’ve made and invent genius ways to do this quickly.. in some kind of mass corporate way that also makes money or it won’t be imitated and expanded upon

Do you find it difficult to conceptualize an idea into reality? Often times when I want to create something the end result often differs from the original thought.
I don’t have trouble conceptually but often the idea changes or expands into something else. I love the process. Sometimes more difficult to stop it. I love to keep it going and evolving.

You are a prime example of the modern idea that one can/should explore serval careers in their lifetime. Has one sector of your career influenced you in your personal life more than the others?
I really think I’ve been doing the same thing this whole time. Sometimes the focus is different or the medium. But I’m usually saying the same thing.

What is next for Tara Subkoff?
Who knows? Only time will tell.
