She Diamond
These photos were taken during her travels through Russia and her life in Ukraine. She captured these images in an attempt to document something like ancient masculinity. Placid moments in the patriarchy, and the solemnity of the Man. Her ‘men’ archive was divided into three folders: Water, Dogs and Daddy. Daddy features a man named Vladimir. Vladimir took her with him to visit his 80 y.o. mother, Baba Klava, in a tiny village a little more than an hour from Penza in Western Russia. Before he picked her up at the train she had never seen him before in her life. They shared a bedroom at Baba Klava’s house and spent every moment together during that week. Once, they went on an excursion through the forest together and he showed her how to taste the poison from an ant. After the anthill, they encountered a big marsh, he scooped her up in his arms and carried her all the way across the marsh, then he told her: “you are my daughter.”
