Sean Gilchrist
Sean Gilchrist is a 22-year old photographer and filmmaker from Arizona. During his studies in economics in rural Pennsylvania, Gilchrist began to photograph street lamps for a university-related project that became a personal project spanning four years. It was during this time he photographed “Appalachia”, which revolves around themes of solitude, isolation, and loneliness specific to agrarian areas. This project, however, as Gilchrist states, attempts to focus more so on the atmosphere, rather than politics of the area.
““This economically disenfranchised part of America found itself at the forefront of the recent presidential election as spiking rates of job loss, drug overdoses, and suicide became a political talking point.””
““Traveling from town to town in what was once a prosperous coal region I felt a feeling of stillness in every place. Caught in the grasp of modernity, resisting change by clinging to its cultural roots was a social vacuum waiting for something new, or a return to the old.””
