Rancho Rocket

When a profile picture is as important as our image. A reflection of the real identity and the appearances. "That's not me!" is a project by Rancho Rocket, architect and planner Boni Jiménez. The project is a digital collage or a “Graphic Shaker”. The works consist of popular elements and icons in different environments or paired with unassociated elements, setting a sense of defamiliarization. Rancho Rocket, for example, includes older pop culture figures such as David Bowie or Norman Bates from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and creates juxtaposition by placing them in modern, candy-colored tracksuits. The ensembles coordinate with the colored backgrounds, yet clash with the collage-like images of famous personas from the past. This contrast creates a dialogue between the two and sets a surreal tone. The defamiliarization and surreal tone mimic hidden desires and deviant behavior in a sterile manner. Jiménez’s project invokes a superficial humor that, in actuality, instigates a sense of unease and the unusual.
