Qualiatik
Turin-based collectives Paynomindtous and Bastione San Maurizio invited NYC-based musician and multimedia artist QUALIATIK to create an installation piece and perform in the space along with Milan’s Macao-affiliated Wisecrack duo, with DJ sets by Paynomindtous’s Vibrisse and Bastione’s Gigo.
In two days of sleepless delirium, the installation was realised and assembled exclusively out of trash that was found around the gallery space. Stimulated by the set design for QUALIATIK’s music video “Mother Tongue” and ideologies they developed during the writing process for Discarnate, the objects, writings, and drawings in the space call to mind philosophical and existential questions that arise when existing in a liminal state.
QUALIATIK’s “Discarnate: The Flesh Failures” invites the viewer into the existential detritus of the anonymous. The viewer explores the subject’s living quarters of extreme isolation. Philosophical interrogations are splattered across the space, holding hands with gnarled figures erupting into amorphous genitalia – ‘enfleshments’ of subconscious dimensions. “The Flesh Failures” envisions these figures as explicit expressions of the conscious and subconscious self, bearing witness to the multitude of physical forms with which one psyche.
The installation urges its viewer to consider how much of their identity is influenced by their physical form, and how fluidity of physicality could give rise to different permutations of the “self”. The project was conceived of by QUALIATIK and created with the help of the hosts of the residency, Paynomindtous and Bastione San Maurizio. QUALIATIK will continue touring in Europe through the coming months.
