Kerry James Marshall
Kerry James Marshall is an American artist who was born on October 17, 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama. The American painter’s works have been showcased internationally at the Venice Biennale and Documenta amongst others. His first retrospective was at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago in April 2016, which later traveled to the Met Breuer in New York.
Marshall’s paintings deal highly with African-American identity especially within his own experiences growing up in South Central Los Angeles and Watts, Los Angeles during the civil rights movement. With his work, Marshall asserts and celebrates blackness especially in spaces African-Americans have been portrayed as invisible, setting the standard for a new normal regarding both the lack of and existing portrayal and representation of blackness. Marshall is currently based in Chicago, Illinois.
