Jack, whats the story behind unconventional direction, im curious to know your thoughts on blending of art and design. Was this vision since always?
I have always been obsessed with everything theatrical and growing up i always wanted to be a theatre designer. I explored lots throughout my teenage years and then studied at CSM which then I realised i was developing my own aesthetic which can lend itself to a much broader spectrum than just theatre.
What fashion means to you? How did it all start, I mean do you recall your first fashion experience? What was it please take us through the memory lane.
Fashion to me is a an escapism, a fantasy and an aspirational desire to elevate the human form. My first experience of fashion in general was when my Mum bought a catwalk magazine featuring Couture Dior by John Galliano and from that first vision it totally changed my perception of fashion and what fashion could mean as it transported my brain into this decadent fantasy and the spectacle and theatre of it all was so inspiring.
As i study about you, i observe your background in arts and to do a lot with craftsmanship, it's evident that you hold a very pecular l mind in terms of craftsmanship. What was the pivotal moment for you?
Yes everything I do is thoroughly rooted in craftmanship. During my teenage years I spent my time after school and in school holidays interning for the most amazing theatre company called Stageworks. Luckily this was in my hometown of Blackpool and they specialised in making giant structural feathered showgirl costumes for big ice skating shows and high end cabarets in Paris. I learnt so much whilst working there and it gave me the best understanding of craftmanship and how to work with the body when working with large structural elements. The team there were rigorous in their making skills and perfectionists so I feel I had this instilled in me from a young age which gave me the best start to my journey.
It's evident your work is driven by shock and experiments since the very first 2014 Enigma, leading to gaining quick attention. I wonder what goes into creative and artistic process for your designs, since its always a different embodiment of avant garde and post modern expression.
Everything I do is inspired by nature and I always want the viewer to feel a sense of the natural world combined with futurism to create a new form of expression.
Your recent collection A/W 2024 again reflects your fantasy towards the alien or extraterrestrial theories. How did such direction come to your process?
What influenced and inspired you and what makes you keep going for such pecular direction ? I'm a futurist and everything I do always has a nod to my obsession with the idea of alien life existing. When we observe nature some of the most bizarre natural phenomena is so incredible it almost seems alien so i want to highlight this feeling with my work.
I wonder what role theater, books, music, or scientific innovation play in your creative process as you seem to be influenced by more than just couple of things? Any artists or creatives you’d like to shout out to?Recent music artist that you blasted in your airpods?
I'm obsessed with the philosopher Ernst Haeckel and I always have his books around my studio for reference and I always watch a lot of David Attenborigh and deep sea discovery documentaries when starting a new body of work. In terms of music I always have techno blasting in the studio as I'm so inspired when I listen to it. I've been blasting a lot of Dj Heartstring recently as they create a really fun, bouncy yet heavy style of techno - so lots of dancing around the studio helping to inspire me.
Jack, As we go to the beginning of your work portfolio , it shows installations and you continue to craft that with your recentinstallation ‘Odyssey’ and various other such events. So its clear that fashion is not the first world that you discovered along the path. Im curious to know how fashion exactly happened to you ? Please take us through the story before CSM happened to you?
Even though I'm known as a fashion designer I'd say first and foremost I'm a showman and always want to create a spectacle with my work. I'm an artist developing an aesthetic and I love to feed that aesthetic into whichever projects arise and this is what I'll continue to do. I think I'd be very bored if I only worked in one medium so I love the freedom of being able to feed my concepts into many forms and mediums. For example, I am working on a sculpture series next.
Im exited o imagine the ambiance of your studio ? How would you describe your studio ? How does your workflow through you?
Its a very calm and white environment with lots of natural light and I like this blank canvas as its makes me think fluidly, Its very calm until we have the techno blasting and then I go into design mode and then it can become chaos but a good creative chaos!
Where we have low attention span and also easy ways of entertainment ? Is the avant garde element your need to touch on some other aspects , i mean what are your intentions with your work?
This might sound odd but it is never my intention to shock a viewer to get attention; it's more about the fundamentals of transforming the human form and seeing the beauty of a piece transforming in front of your eyes and its more about creating a sense of awe rather than shock value.
What is your objective and what you looking forward to achieve, specially as you continue exploring various aspects of your creative capabilities ?
I'm going to continue on the path I'm on and keep making wearable art of the same aesthetic but also exploring more art mediums and large scale sculptures and gallery based work.
What does art means and continuing to do that you do, means for you?
For me I want to express my abstract vision for the future through my work.
Any Shout out to supporting artists and creative team for making you get through all that you do ?
Yes - Rhys Beynon is my creative associate and he's my right hand man and involved in everything I create. We're a great team.
