Haotian Wang
When it comes to minimalistic wonderment, your first port of call should be Haotian Wang’s simple yet compelling publishing project. A stark supporter of the publication, this in turn is then mirrored in the work he creates, which could be easily described as perennial beauties. But do not be mistaken in ascribing this artists practice as ‘old fashioned’, far from it. Wang’s openness in the face of creative practice ensures both contemporary, but indeed timeless, publications. Drawing inspiration from the world around him, Wang magnifies the beauty in the every-day and highlight’s the small delights which are often missed by the untrained eye.
What is your personal approach to creative practice?
I often get inspired by living in the city, like the time when i studied in Milano where my apartment was close to the Mid-East immigration area, I should go through the road to get home, along the street there are grocery hair salon etc. with exotic image which fascinates me a lot. That could be the starting point to process my work.
How does photography affect your creativity and artistry?
I think photography is the essential method of my practice, I did not consider it as the final result, so do not call me photographer please.
Your publishing project has produced very beautiful works of art in the form of minimalist publications. What are the influences behind creating these publications?
Every high-tech folks think that publication is outdated and I could get it, but I insist the value of publication by transforming the data into object and lasting for long time.
And how do you go about choosing subject matter for your publication’s and other projects? Where do you find your inspiration?
I mean everyone has their aesthetics, I just spend a lot of time on instagram and there are so many talented people there, I try to reach out to them and work together.
Are there any creatives or artists whose work you find particularly compelling or motivational?
I am currently working with two friends, I will publish their book under my publishing project (please follow h-pp), it is actually a letter sheet which is more familiar to asian kids I think, we used to write diaries or letters on it and you can not find it anymore, it has become our nostalgia. They tried to recreate that memory with their drawing and certain style of lay out, I can not wait to see the result.
Lastly, what are your plans for the future? Any exciting new projects coming up?
My plan could be making clothing and creating a brand, I am not sure yet! '
