What is the best part about growing up in Oregon?
I would say the rain and the nature, it’s a very calm place I always feel very grounded when I’m there.
How do you find living in New York?
There are moments when it can be stressful, but I love it. I was talking about this the other day with a friend, I think my favourite thing about New York is the things you overhear on the street. No one cares who’s around or what other people think, its like we’re all in our own bubbles.
What is your thesis project/collection about?
My thesis project is basically about the separation of music and image, particularly because of social media. I’m part of one of the first generations where our first interaction with music is usually an image on the Internet not the music itself so I wanted to look at how that’s changed the experience of fans and the importance of image. It’s not a traditional fashion collection, but I am making clothes. I could talk about it for days, my whole year has been consumed by it.
Have you ever visited Ireland ever since you moved from there?
Yes I go back usually once a year, I was there in January. I love going back, it feels very nostalgic, my grandma’s apartment has looked the exact same since the 70’s.
What is your favourite module in fashion design?
I think both designing and wearing I would say jackets and coats, they cover everything else up so I suppose they’re the most important.
Why did you choose to study at Parsons?
I felt like I needed to be in a city that fashion was important in so the fact that its in New York and has such a good reputation made it an easy decision.
How do you wish to stand out in fashion?
It’s taken me a while to come to this conclusion but I think the reason I like fashion is because it says so much about people and how we try to stand out and fit in, its about creating an idea of who you are so it can be very psychological. I think where I differ from some of my peers is that I look at fashion as a means of social commentary, fashion can be much deeper than people give it credit for.
What makes a good Instagram post?
I think a good instagram is aesthetically pleasing and doesn't take itself too seriously.
