Down The River
'Down The River' is a cultural research project featuring the various cultures within 11 cities along the Volga River, flowing through central Russia from Moscow to Chistopol and back. Director, Yulia Gudkova, and the remaining film crew created this project from an outside perspective, which allows each city’s unique identity and cultural practices to speak on its own.
As we only see this project from the view of an outsider, we are able to closely observe the patterns of different societal standards, idolized heroes, practiced and unpracticed Russian traditions, and the new art forms created to break stereotypes. Gudkova and his film crew recognized the one similarity amongst the vastly different cities, and in that moment their cultural research project transformed itself into a story.
The 11 cities captured along the longest river in Europe had one connection of maintaining a valuable lifestyle in their own form, despite their cultural differences. The attitude of bringing something valuable to their city was the constant similarity that connected these cities down the Volga River.
