Cameron Portland is an artist born and raised in South London. Portland’s work is self-described as urban-abstract-expressionism and revolve around his identity and experience as a Black male, specifically in London.

Two of a kind

“[My] works often reference the beauty of characteristically black anatomical features, in an attempt to challenge social stigmas.”

Portland’s caricature work is not unlike Kara Walker’s exaggerated silhouette cutouts as he explains that his work is recognizable through this enhancement of facial features much like Walker’s works.

“A lot of my characteristics of my caricatures are influenced by a small tribe called the ‘san people’ which has been said to be the ‘purest form of black people’, which share very strong features. These features in my pieces are deliberately used to highlight and celebrate instead of hiding away and [being] made to feel embarrassed about them.”

Vitiligo

Portland’s practice is strong through various manifestations—contextually, color palette-wise, and, most strikingly, its brushwork. Portland is currently based in London.
