Singer-songwriter Anna of the North is a self acclaimed weird ass white girl. You have probably heard her voice before, possibly on the track ‘Boredom’ by Tyler, The Creator, or maybe you have heard her own song ‘Lovers’ in the movie ‘To All the Boy’s I’ve Loved Before’. Anna has released two albums that touch upon both heartbreak and moving on, she takes inspiration from everyday life and her music is something many of us can relate to. We hear from Anna as she tells us about the challenges she has had to face as a performer and her musical journey to becoming an accomplished artist.

Is singing something that you have always wanted pursue?

Music has always been a big part of my life. My dad is a musician so there's always been a lot of music around. He had a little studio in our basement, where I’ve recorded a lot of stuff. We have some recordings from when I was like four years old. It’s super cute. At the same time as I’ve been loving creating music, I hated performing. I’ve never been good in situations where I have to prove myself in anyway. Where I had to show that I was good at something. I’d always get so nervous; my entire body would just stop working. It’s the reason why I still don’t have my drivers license. Last time I tried I started to cry. So I kind of never thought that this would be my life. Performing and stuff. I used to be a nervous wreck. I’ve overcome a lot of obstacles.

What inspires your music in terms of writing lyrics and creating tracks?

Everyday life. Music. Movies. People. Everyday. Books.

You have collaborated with the likes of Tyler, The Creator and Reejie Snow, which must have been an an amazing opportunity for you. How would you say this has helped shaped your career, especially in terms of exposure?

I’ve been really lucky to work with some great artists. Of course it's been big for me, and helped me get to the place I am today. When you keep opening and closing doors crazy stuff happens.

You released your second album ‘Dream Girl’ last October, what is this album all about?

My first album, Lovers, was the ‘heartbreak’ album. I feel like Dream Girl is the ‘moving on’ album. It’s a lot of rhythm, it's positive, organic. It’s about trying to stay positive and about being proud of yourself and who you are. Everyone knows that there is no such thing as a dream girl, but you can be your own dream girl.

Do you have a favourite track on ‘Dream Girl’?

My absolute favourite track is ‘leaning on myself’. It is a really important song to me. It was written in a time of my life when I was struggling with some stuff. I needed that song in my life. It’s my anthem. Whenever I feel a bit shit, I just turn that song up.

What is next for Anna of the North?

Life is weird at the moment with the corona situation going on. I’m mostly spending my time creating. Hopefully everything will go back to normal soon. I want to play live shows again!
