Alfonso Cuarón
Cuarón's coming of age film presents teenage boys with raging hormones, girls they want to screw and friends they try to impress. As Julio and Tenoch’s girlfriends leave for a Eurotrip, the boys have an idea of a trip of their own. After they meet Luisa, a beautiful woman in her late 20’s, they plan to put this voyage into fruition. They take a long drive to the fictional secluded beach, made up by the boys, called the Boca del Cielo, which translates as Heavens Mouth.
The director replaces the dialogue at various times with an omniscient narrator. At times, it fills in plot holes, and at other times he tells us the fate of stray pigs the protagonists encounter on a beach. The narrator is a key factor in escalating this movie from a generic American road film, to one which has the depth of a novel. The narrator reads “Life is like the foam of the sea, you must dive into it,” and after taking a trip with these friends, you’ll want to dive in too.
